Just what is a pest? Pests can pose a significant threat to our health, property, and way of life. Mice, birds, termites, and ants are part of our ecosystem, but when these pests cross the line and get in our threshold, the threat is real. These pests can damage our homes and our health if not properly controlled. Here are few examples of how pests threaten our health.

Spiders can deliver poisonous bites that range from irritating to potentially fatal. There are over 3000 species of spiders in the United States. The Brown Recluse is a spider that is in this area and is getting a lot of recognition. One the the leading causes of Asthma is Roaches. Roaches spread many diseases. Stinging insects are most unpleasant, they can cause painful reactions and can even be fatal causing an allergic reaction in some people. Rodents can multiply really quick in the confines of your home. They can spread a variety of diseases, including Salmonellosis (food poisoning) and Hantavirus (virus from rodent feces).

Our home, the most valued asset can be be threatened by termites, Carpenter Bees/ Ants, and wildlife. Termites cause billions of dollars of damage each year. Termites do not go dormant in Winter, however they do slowdown . Termite colonies can multiply quickly, causing extensive property damage, if the problem is not taken care of. Carpenter ants & carpenter bees may look like other types of ants & bees. Carpenter ants and Carpenter bees tunnel into wood to lay their eggs, causing damage to the property. Wildlife usually cause damage on the out side of your property but can get in and destroy the inside. Bats, raccoons, squirrels can leave feces behind, it can build up if the animals are not removed. Here are a few tips that you can do to help keep pests out of your property:

• Store firewood at least 20 feet away from you home
• Caulk around windows & doors
• Eliminate any standing water
• Keep gutters free of debris and check all vents to see if they are in working condition
• Replace damaged weather stripping
• Replace damaged shingles
• Repair any leaks, cracks and gaps around the foundation
• Keep garbage areas clean and keep garbage covered
